Under Glass Page 5

In this case, the item came first because I saw a very interesting glass plate with legs, in a shop, that just happened to be 50% off. So I bought it not really knowing what I would use it for. Then, I had an advertisement from an American mag. (AD) that I cut out some time ago, and thought it might go well on the plate. The page was colour copied at 110% so it would fit the space. After cutting it out in one piece I pasted it on using Aquadhere. And cleaned up the glass very carefully. It was quite difficult to paste on as the plate was in a concave shape, so I cut a few notches and pleated it a little. The background colour I mixed iridescent white & Cad.yellow medium in a 3/1 ratio, also over painted the bottom in the yellow so it gave a graded look. Gesso was applied after this and then titanium white and phalo green ( 4/1). I then varnished it with 15 coats of Aqualaq (sic). After this I framed the "picture" with strips of gold paper leaving a clear glass border between the picture and the frosted outside border. Lastly the corners were covered with 4 silver squares to complement the silver legs.

The image was cut out and glued on to the centre of the back of the plate. Over the remaining area I applied two coats of gold leaf (Dutch gold), which were then sealed with two coats of white shellac. I sponged on several layers of white gesso - sanding in between - until the back was totally smooth and then brushed on one coat of sealer. To finish off I painted the back of the plate with several coats of Red Earth and when they had dried covered them with several coats of oil-based satin varnish.

For this plate I did not cut out indiviudal images but covered the central portion of the plate with one piece of my chosen paper. I followed the same process as with the round gold-border plate, but painted the back blue instead of terracotta (Red Earth).
