Godward Lady Plate by Beverlie Mercer

Bev's Godward Lady Plate

Beverlie made this plate at the same time as Denise made hers in a workshop given by Nerida Singleton. Her technique is described on Page 1 of the Under Glass Section.

Turkish Silver Plate by Irgmard Ditchburn

Irmgard's Turkish Silver Plate

Irmgard's Turkish Silver Plate Close Up

For this plate I cut out a Turkish motif from a card and then glued it on to the reverse side of the plate with wallpaper paste. After removing the excess glue I applied two layers of silver leaf over the whole back of the plate. To protect the silver leaf I brushed on a coat of white shellac followed by another one of sealer.

I then painted the whole of the back with several coats of white gesso - sanding in between - until the back was perfectly smooth. When the gesso was totally dry I applied one coat of sealer.

To finish I sponged over several coats of mixture of equal parts of Cobalt Blue, Pearl White and Iridescent Blue and then brushed on several coats of water-based gloss varnish to protect the back of the plate..
